Fee Recovery

The Fee Recovery feature allows organizations and non-profits to ask donors to cover payment processing fees during checkout. By transferring transaction costs to the donor on a voluntary basis, 100% of the intended donation goes directly toward your cause.

How Fee Recovery Works

  1. Donation Context Requirement: The Fee Recovery checkbox will only be visible in a donation checkout context (when a customer has added a donation product to their cart). It will not appear during standard product checkouts.
  2. On-the-Fly Calculation: As soon as a donor checks the fee recovery box, the plugin calculates the transaction cost based on the selected payment gateway and adds it directly to the order total as a WooCommerce fee line item.

Enabling and Configuring Fee Recovery

To set up Fee Recovery for your store:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to WooCommerce > Settings > Donations.
  2. Scroll to the Fee Recovery section and check the option Ask donors to cover transaction fees. to activate it.
  3. Enter your default or gateway-specific processing costs:
    • Fixed Amount: Enter the flat transaction cost per payment method (e.g., $0.30).
    • Variable Percentage: Enter the percentage cost per payment method (e.g., 2.9%).
  4. Save changes.

Setting Rates Per Payment Gateway

Different payment gateways (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, direct bank transfer) charge different processing rates. You can configure individual fee recovery rates tailored to each active payment gateway:

  • Set Amount per Payment Method: Specify custom fixed and variable fee rates for each gateway listed in your settings.
  • Dynamic Checkout Experience: When a donor selects a payment gateway at checkout, the fee amount updates dynamically based on the exact rate assigned to that specific payment method.

Donor Checkout Experience

Once enabled and saved:

  • A dedicated fee recovery checkbox appears on the checkout page when a donation product is in the cart.
  • If the donor checks the box, the calculated fee is immediately added to their order summary.
  • The order breakdown clearly displays the base donation alongside the covered fee, giving donors full transparency.

As soon as the fee recovery option is activated and saved, a checkbox appears in the checkout. If the donor activates this, the corresponding transaction costs are added.
